Child starting school? Check your Child Care Subsidy

When a child starts school, care arrangements often change. Long day care may reduce, before or after school care may begin, and vacation care may become part of the picture. These changes can affect the details that go into a CCS estimate — and a previous estimate based on earlier arrangements may no longer match real life.

Estimate your CCS today — then keep checking when life changes.

Why starting school can affect your CCS estimate

CCS estimates depend on the care type, fees, hours and other details entered. Starting school doesn't automatically change CCS entitlement — but it often changes the care arrangement significantly, and those changes can affect what the estimate looks like.

  • A child moving from long day care to outside school hours care will typically have different session lengths, fees and hourly rate caps — all of which go into an estimate.
  • Before school care, after school care and vacation care are different service types with different fee structures — a new estimate based on those details may differ from a previous long day care estimate.
  • Reducing care days when school starts can change total fees and estimated out-of-pocket costs.
  • A previous estimate based on long day care arrangements may no longer reflect care arrangements once school begins.

Common care changes when a child starts school

  • Moving from long day care to outside school hours care (OSHC)
  • Starting before school care
  • Starting after school care
  • Starting vacation care
  • Reducing childcare days as school starts
  • Changing provider or service type
  • Care hours no longer matching what was entered before
  • Fees or session times changing with a different service type

Why a one-off estimate can become outdated

A one-off estimate is based on the care details entered at the time — care type, hours, days and fees. The transition to school often changes all of these. An earlier estimate based on full-time long day care will not reflect a new arrangement involving before and after school care or vacation care only.

A fresh estimate with updated care details can help families understand their possible out-of-pocket costs for the new arrangement, based on the details they enter.
